Renowned Human Rights Lawyer Paul Muite has come to the defence of Mwende Mwinzi, the nominee for the ambassadorial position for South Korea.
In a tweet on Wednesday evening, Muite called on the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi to rally Members of Parliament to scrap off a constitutional provision that requires ambassadors not to hold dual citizenships.
The veteran activist-cum-lawyer called the condition unconstitutional and sought to remind Speaker Muturi that President Kenyatta was in Canada to promote the rights of women.
"Mheshimiwa Speaker Hon J Muturi, please guide the National Assembly to remove the unconstitutional condition that Mwende Mwinzi renounces her American citizenship vested in her by birth as was her Kenyan one. The President is in Canada showcasing Kenya's promotion of women!" Muite's post read.
Mwende Mwinzi has American citizenship which could bar her from becoming Kenya's ambassador to South Korea.
The parliamentary committee that vetted her recommended that she be given the job subject to renouncing her American citizenship.
The recommendation was based on Section 31(1) of the Leadership and Integrity Act that stipulates that no State officer shall hold the citizenship of another country.
