Residents of Ebiosi village in Mochengo, Nyacheki in Kisii County were left in a rude shock after a man was killed at a funeral on Friday night over what was ais to be a woman's love.
Area assistant chief Benson Ogutu confirmed the incident and said trouble started when the deceased Evans Mbwayo stormed the funeral and picked a quarrel with a man Sylvanus Okemwa who was having a chat with a woman Mildred Moraa.
"Residents were discussing the burial arrangement for one of the members in the village who died on Monday when the deceased armed with a machete arrived at the funeral at 9 pm and accused Okemwa of snatching his woman. Okemwa was angered and descended on the deceased with a wooden block," he said.
Ogutu said the deceased died on the spot while Okemwa fled from the scene in fear of being lynched by residents and mourners.
"Upon questioning the woman, she denied having a relationship with either of the men only that she had seated with the suspect at the funeral," said the chief.
He said the suspect has gone into hiding while the body of the deceased was moved to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital morgue.
