In Nairobi on Wednesday, Obado admitted that he had a relationship with Ms. Otieno, whose mutilated body was retrieved from Kodera forest but denied involvement in her murder.

"I ask all agencies involved to speed up investigations so the killers are brought to book as quickly as possible," he said in his short address to journalists. He did not take questions.

Earlier in a KTN interview, his lawyer Cliff Ombeta said the governor's relationship with Sharon was in public domain.

"When the photos were circulating in social media long before this, it was not a secret even the people in the county knew about it...there was a relationship," he said.

And according to the officer privy to Obado's Tuesday statement in Kisumu, the second term governor admitted impregnating the slain student.

Further, Obado said while Sharon wanted a house in Nairobi, he had however suggested to buy her land in Rongo where he'd later build a house for her.

Ms. Otieno's mother, Melida Auma insisted that Obado had asked her daughter to terminate pregnancy, an idea which precipitated their differences.

Police are still investigating the murder with Obado's PA Michael Oyamo still condemned in custody.
