The lawmaker has already written to the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to petition for the plant to be legalised in all parts of the nation.

He has asked the government to drop all charges facing persons who were found with the plant with the immediate effect.

In a letter dated September 21, 2018, Okoth asked for the regulation of the growing, distribution and use of the said plant.

He also called for research on the plant to determine its unknown benefits prior to the legalisation.

Similarly, he wants the preservation of the intellectual property rights for the government of this nation because the plant is considered indigenous.

“The proposed Bill seeks to ensure that there is regulation for growth and safe use of marijuana and hemp including the registration of growers, producers, manufacturers and users,” reads the letter.

He opines that the legalisation of the plant will not only boost the economy of this nation but also create jobs for millions of youths languishing in abject poverty in different regions.

The move has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions.
