Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has revealed what the National Cereals and Produce Board(NCPB) should to farmers who have not received their dues after delivering their produce.
Speaking in Eldoret town during the public participation of the proposed 2019/20 budget on Tuesday, Chemno said farmers should be given back their maize in the conditions they delivered to sell to other interested parties.
“I am asking the government to pay those who delivered their maize and if not, they should return the produce to farmers for them to find an alternative market for themselves,” said Chemno.
He wondered why the government is not serious with farmers' issues yet they want the country to be food secure.
“We cannot allow the government to be taking us right left and centre while farmers spend a lot of money producing maize. Some of them have not paid their loans and soon their property might be auctioned,” added the Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor.
Uasin Gishu Woman Rep Gladys Boss Sholei who also graced the occasion warned the government against importing more maize since the country has enough maize.
Shollei said the funds meant for the importation of maize in the national budget should be used to pay farmers who delivered their produce to NCPB.
