With all the political heat being heaped under the Deputy President William Ruto's seat, it is increasingly becoming hotter and hotter for the self-proclaimed hustler.
Inasmuch as he has many diehard politicians who are drumming up support for his 2022 presidential bid, it is only him (Ruto) who is feeling the heat.
It started when President Uhuru Kenyatta referred to his movements around the country as 'kutangatanga'.
This was followed by the President's stern warning to politicians who are engaging in early campaigns to either shape up or shape out.
Though not directed to a particular person, the warning was undoubtedly directed to the Ruto team who are busy drumming up support for his 2022 campaign.
Another salvo directed to Ruto came in the form of one Mr. David Murathe.
On January 6, 2019, Murathe resigned as the interim vice-chairman of Jubilee party citing conflict of interest in his vow to stop DP William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.
Mr. Murather has vowed to even go to court if that is what it will cost him to make sure Ruto does not become the fifth president of Kenya.
The latest blow to DP Ruto is the recent elevation of Interior CS Fred Matiang'i to the position of what analysts have described as a 'super-minister.'
Many politicians in the Ruto's camp openly expressed their concern on what the appointment meant as far as DP Ruto's role in the government is concerned.
Amidst all these, DP Ruto has not and cannot dare to raise his voice against Uhuru.
Many are wondering why he is acting all meek, cool and collected. In my opinion, the DP cannot oppose the president because the president is all he has as far as his 2022 race is concerned.
First of all, the president's party Jubilee 'swallowed up' his party United republican party (URP).
Parting ways with the president will mean he will have to pull out URP from Jubilee party and kind of start fresh campaigns of re-popularizing his party.
Another reason why Ruto cannot oppose the president is the fact that he needs Central Kenya votes in order to win the presidency.
The president is the de-facto Central Kenya political kingpin and anyone interested in winning the presidency come 2022 must just sweet-talk him.
The third chord connecting the DP and the president is the pact they made in the run-up to the 2013 and 2017 elections.
According to the pact, the president is to go for two terms and then hand over the mantle to him. He is biding time waiting to see if the president will keep his word. It is too early to make conclusions.
