President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday announced that the minimum salary for seafarers will be Ksh. 85,000 per month.
The commander in chief of the armed forces said that he is committed to ensuring that the seafarers have reasons to work with diligence in the line of their duty.
He noted that the government has been facing some challenges but he is ready to stand with the seafarers, adding that the shipping sector will create more than 50,000 new jobs.
“The lowest salary of the seafarers will be a minimum of Ksh. 85,000 per month, each of them to receive one return ticket for annual leave, meals, accommodation, health insurance as well as access to world-class trainings” Uhuru Kenyatta.
He also said that the renewal of shipping and logistics sector will create a balance environment for better performance.
He also said that the government would have created more jobs once the new project is unveiled.
"The renewing of the shipping and logistics sector will enable Kenya to participate more fully in regional and global maritime transport value-chains. This, I believe, will create more than 50,000 new jobs in the medium term & make our imports cheaper," he added.
The commander in chief of the armed forces also said that he was grateful to different stakeholders for their role in the new project.
