The struggle to end human trafficking cases has not borne fruits because of the lack of funds, judges have said.
Speaking on Monday at a human trafficking forum in Nairobi, the judges said that they need more funds to hasten the hearing and determination of these cases.
Led by the director of the Judiciary Training Institute, Kathurima M’Inoti, the judges said that the lack of finances has been one of the major hurdles in their fight to do away with the cases from the courtroom.
“We all agree that as a country we have several human trafficking cases. This comes with Kenya being an avenue for human trafficking. It affects the poor and the vulnerable,” said M’Inoti.
The plight comes after Chief Justice David Maraga decried frustration from the Executive. He lamented that there has been a backlog of these cases because the Judiciary is cash-strapped.
M’Inoti also said that some of the judges, as well as magistrates, do not have adequate skills to hear and determine such cases within the shortest time possible.
He further said that he acknowledges the fact that there are several human trafficking cases that have been reported in the recent past.
Different stakeholders including magistrates and judges were present to attend the event.
