It is the holiday season. People are travelling home to spend Christmas with their loved ones.
Travelling to places such as Eldoret from Nairobi usually necessitates a stopover at Nakuru or near Nakuru.
These stopovers, usually decided by the matatu Sacco, normally charge an arm and a leg for a meal or even drinks. A bottle of half litre juice that usually retails at Sh65 is sold at Sh100. A plate of chips goes for Sh150.
If you are yearning not pay any more than normal prices, either on principle or to save, do the following;
Eat well before you travel
If you are the kind that cannot afford to miss a meal, eat a heavy breakfast before you embark on your journey. This is limited to journeys lasting not more than 8 hours. At the stopover, you will only stop to stretch your legs, catch-free air or relieve yourself.
Buy foodstuff and snacks in Nairobi
The best way to beat the exorbitant prices is to buy some snacks before you begin your journey. Otherwise, you will be forced to buy them at almost double the price.
Find a cheaper place to eat near the stopover
Nowadays inventive business people have set up small food stalls, otherwise known as 'kibandaski', near stopovers. For someone looking to save a few coins, this provides an ultimate eating joint. Of course, your stomach has to be built for such kind of foods.
