The County Government of Lamu in partnership with Safaricom Foundation will construct a maternity wing for expectant women at Witu Health Centre.
Governor Fahim Twaha said the wing which will have 10 beds, will enable expectant mothers from across Witu area to stay for at least 10 days before delivering their babies.
According to Twaha, this will reduce cases of maternal deaths, besides providing better healthcare to newborn babies.
Speaking after laying a foundation stone ahead of commencement of construction of the facility, the Lamu County chief hailed Safaricom Foundation, saying it has continued to transform lives.
On her part, Safaricom Foundation Trustee Janice Mwendameru said the foundation will continue supporting maternal health across counties, and asked county governments to support the initiative, sentiments that were echoed by Lamu East MP, Shariff Athman (who was also present).
