This follows reports that Uhuru failed to secure an Sh368 billion loan from China, money that was reportedly for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu.

But Koigi now says China's decline to avail the loan was most likely as a result of fears on the lenders' side that the money would not be used in the right manner and instead squandered and stolen.

"Wachina huenda wameona kua ufisadi na ubadirifu huu tulio nao, hatutaweza kuwalipa pesa zao (it is possible that the Chinese feared that the money will be squandered or lost in graft and that we will not be able to pay it back)," he said.

Koigi was speaking on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening.

He further said that with the corruption rates in the nation increasing, the next victim will be the much-hyped Big Four Agenda, which he said might also succumb to the very same ailment.

The former legislator argued that the government has been unable to revive the economy, wondering how the president will develop the nation and realize the agenda with a limping economy.

"Hata hii Agenda 4 huenda haitafaulu maana tumekosa nidhamu ya kuboresha uchumi (the Big 4 agenda might not succeed because we are not keen on strengthening the economy)," he added.

The Agenda revolves around better healthcare, housing, food security and industrialization, which were president Uhuru's 2017 reelection campaign promises.
