In February 2019, Hivisasa covered a story from Kisii county about collapsing classrooms at Magena Primary school in Sensi ward.
The story was published by Geoff Gichana who is based in Kisii county. The writer highlighted that the classrooms were in bad shape and therefore posing a great risk to students and teachers.
Teachers who were interviewed stated that the school’s facilities were in poor condition. He noted that the Constituency Development fund management had not allocated any money towards the repair of the classrooms. The classrooms were developing cracks, meaning that they could collapse anytime.
Gichana covered the story after receiving a tip-off from the public. He visited the school where he witnessed the situation first hand. The story was published and shared on various social media platforms.
It led to a heated debate with former students putting area MP Richard Onyonka on the spot. The students noted that it was a shame to be associated with the school.
With online backlash, the constituency management learned about the story. At the school, only three classrooms were in good condition.
After the Hivisasa story, the Constituency Development Fund managed to construct four new classrooms that have salvaged the situation.
