The disbandment of the Flying Squad Unit took effect on Tuesday as part of a reorganisation effort, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the law enforcement agency announced to the public that as from Dec 31, 2019, no officer would present himself or herself as a flying squad officer.

The Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) unit has been renamed and scaled down to the Special Service Unit (SSU) and will be based in Nairobi.

"With effect from today, the Unit has equally been disbanded. This marks the end of the Flying Squad Unit & no officer will present himself or herself to the public as such. Equally, the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) has been scaled down to a smaller unit only based, " the DCI tweeted.

".. at Headquarters, Nairobi. It has been renamed Special Service Unit (SSU). Officers deployed in the unit have undergone intense training in & outside the country leading to the upgrading of their competencies, enhanced skills & knowledge aimed at making the Unit more effective..., " the DCI added.

The announcement comes as the DCI tries to reorganise its operations in a bid to be effective in fighting crime across the country.
