According to Tobacco Control Unit Head Dr Dorcas Kiptui, the move to introduce the subject was due to the high consumption among minors.

"We have already incorporated tobacco control in the primary and secondary schools curriculum in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. It is clear from the findings of various studies that increased awareness through education has long-term consequences on those abusing certain tobacco products," Kiptui stated.

The unit's plan outlines that school children aged between 13 and 15 years of age were using tobacco due to easy accessibility.

Dr Kiptui added that the subject will be incorporated into the curriculum for healthcare training, especially for dentists, medical officers.

Tobacco companies have been faulted for putting up adverts next to schools, something that encourages the use of tobacco among minors.

In a quick rejoinder, Tobacco firms have denied the allegations.
