A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) had planned to jeer President Uhuru Kenyatta during Thursday’s State of the Nation address at parliament.
The MPs are reportedly those allied to Deputy President William Ruto.
Reports on the Sunday Nation indicate that the MPs agreed to position them strategically in parliament, ready to boo the head of state if he tried to demean his deputy in his speech.
They would also reportedly walk out in protest if President Kenyatta tried to sack any Cabinet Secretary allied to the DP during the address.
“The Sunday Nation learnt that initially, the Ruto camp had made a conscious decision to boycott the event out of fear that the President would use the address to quarrel his deputy and off load the Cabinet secretaries suspected to be corrupt, a majority who it is believed belong to their side,” the paper reported.
This strategy was, however, dismissed after the MPs went into a meeting with strategists.
The politicians agreed to attend the address but ‘call the President’s bluff and walk out on him if he used the opportunity to sack the CSs’.
“They also agreed to jeer in the event the President resorted to use the address to attack, disparage or even demean Mr Ruto, or make comments that appeared to praise the ODM leader Raila Odinga,” the paper added.
