Supreme Court Judge Smokin Wanjala has denied receiving Sh.75 million bribery to rule in favour of Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud.
In a response filed on Wednesday, the judge said that he has never taken any bribe before and he doesn’t intend to take one any soon.
This comes after Jared Ongeri asked the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to investigate his conduct following the unanimous ruling in the August 2017 General elections.
Ongeri asked the JSC to remove judges Smokin, Jackton Ojwang, Mohamed Ibrahim and Njoki Ndung’u from office for allegedly taking the bribe to subvert the will of the people.
Smokin, however, wants the case dropped to save his reputation.
Through Senior Counsel Fred Ojiambo, Smokin insisted that he was innocent but pledged to corporate with the commission as investigations into the bribery claims continue.
According to Ojiambo, the accusations levelled against his client are not only premature but also premeditated.
He told the court that the accusations will result in intimidation of character of the judge. He also said that the case is defective and there is no need for it to be heard in court.
“The petitioners have themselves realized deficiencies of their complaints and are calling for further investigations to be conducted, “he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.
