The flamboyant governor, who is popular for his comic and tough speeches, is the only governor elected on a KANU ticket and has been a traditional supporter of the Jogoo party.

At a function in Kapenguria on Friday, Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok ignited the debate, arguing that the entire Rift Valley region should support Dr Ruto.

“There is no time to campaign for a referendum before 2022 elections and if it will be there we will wait out. I urge West Pokot governor John Lonyangapuo to support our deputy president to clinch the presidential seat in 2022,” he said.

In response, the former senator said he will be keen to support leaders who will have launched most projects in his county.

He said that he does not have a problem with the DP, adding that the Ruto has been a frequent visitor in the region for years.

“I will look at the leadership structure of an individual. Come 2022 I will rally West Pokot voters to a person who has initiated projects in our county," he said.

He added: "Just like Nanok said, we want to be in government as Rift Valley. We shall walk that path like he said. I am sure we are on the safe side."

This would be a big blow to Gideon Moi, who has also announced intentions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022. Moi insists that he has come of age.
