The Election Amendment Bill 2018 seeks to have the general election date changed from August to December.

The Bill will be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, October 17 for debate and voting.

The Ford Kenya MP has since exuded confidence that the Bill will sail through.

Wamalwa says that over 250 MPs have pledged to support and vote for the Bill on Wednesday.

“We only need 233 MPs to support the Bill and currently I have guarantee from over 250 lawmakers that they will vote in favor of the Bill,” Wamalwa said on Monday.

According to political analyst Peter Ngure, President Kenyatta's term will extend by four months if the Amendment Bill by Kimilili MP sails through.

“The Bill could see Uhuru’s term extend beyond 2022 since the constitution provides that the general election be held on the first Tuesday of August in the fifth year of a presidential term,” he said.

The analyst further says that the country will have to go to a referendum to effect the changes should the MPs pass the Bill.

“We are likely to go for a referendum if the MPs endorse the Bill by the legislator,” he said.

Ngure observed that if the Bill is passed by Parliament, it will be taken to the Senate for debate and voting.

The analyst adds that if the Senate endorses the Bill, it will be forwarded to the president for assent.

“If the President signs the Bill into law then Kenyans will have no option but to go to a referendum to endorse the constitutional changes,” he adds.
