It is often said that when you win your morning, you win the rest of the day.
Among the Kikuyus, a good day is known in the morning (muthenya mwega umenyekaga rucini).
A typical Kikuyu morning begins by switching on the radio to know what happened overnight and what to expect on the day ahead. And as you would expect, many will switch on either Kameme or Inooro FM, the most popular Gikuyu radio stations.
Kameme FM breakfast show (Arahuka) is hosted by Gatonye Wa Mbugua alongside comedian Mzee Kiengei. On the other hand, Inooro FM breakfast show (Hagaria) is hosted by Jeff Kuria, Wambui Wa Muturi and a comedian who joined recently.
But which of the two morning shows really rocks and why?
Well, according to Geopoll Survey for the first quarter of 2018, Kameme's 'Arahuka' rates slightly ahead of Inooro's 'Hagaria'. And indeed many fans of Kikuyu radio will tell you that it is more enjoying listening at Kameme in the morning than Inooro. Here is why.
1. Hosts chemistry: Take it or leave it, Gatonye and Kiengei have a formidable chemistry that keeps listeners informed, educated and most of all entertained.
From the days when they were hosting the nightly show (Mawatchmen), the two just have a strong synergy that is appealing to morning listeners who are out to start their day in a hype.
Inooro FM's breakfast hosts, on the other hand, sound like couples in a forced relationship. Kuria and Wambui simply have a dead chemistry. Listening to them, you will hear it in their voices that they lack motivation and inspiration.
Nevertheless, Kuria soared into the limelight when he was the 'Kuihuria' (afternoon show) host. He also did exemplary well when he used to host the Hagaria Saturday Edition.
Wambui was also good while doing Kameme FM's midmorning show (Canjamuka) and sex-talk show (Kwibanga) because of her chit-chatty nature. This, however, doesn't augur well with a breakfast show.
So, could it be a case of wrong chemistry between the two hosts?
2. Entertainment aspect: Gatonye and Kiengei are both in their own ways comical. Their show is not only entertaining but thrilling. They have redefined Kikuyu morning radio from what it used to be: Politics! Politics! Politics!
On Inooro, while Kuria is funny, comical and entertaining, Wambui isn't anything close to that while the recently introduced comedian is just 'there'.
