Kisii County Governor James Ongwae and His Deputy Joash Maangi have urged residents to come out in large numbers for Saturday's special Mashujaa Day Celebrations.
Kisii County will host its First mashujaa day under the newly renovated Gusii stadium which will be crowned by the much awaited Kenya federation women Division one league where Gusii Starlets FC will be hosting Bulemia starlets FC.
Mashujaa Day previously Known as Kenyatta Day is typically a day to remember those people who fought hard to better our society in different platforms.
In the year 2015, Kisii county government drafted a programme to build statues and monuments to honour freedom heroes.
Some of the Kisii heroes include Otenyo Nyamaterere, Moraa Ng’iti, Henry Motego, Ogwora Bitega, Siruel Moturi, Ongeri Nyamateganda, Bethuel Nyagaka , Nyamacharara among many others.
Among the heroes, Otenyo Nyamaterere was a Kenyan warrior who led a battalion of Gusii warriors in resisting British colonization. He was encouraged by his aunt Moraa Ngiti, to launch an attack against British forces.
He is famously remembered for injuring GAS Northcote, a British colonial administrator, triggering a widespread rebellion.
Henry Motego is one of the finest football forwards Kenya has ever produced on the football pitch. He won several titles for the Kenya national football team in the ‘90s.
2018 will not be just a normal Mashujaa Day Celebration but a day of History in Kisii County.
