Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino alias Paul Ongili has issued a statement after his arrest on Friday morning.
In a statement on his Facebook page, the lawmaker has stated that his life has been in danger and has in the recent past reported to the police on the same. He alleged that he has been receiving threats from rival politicians.
"At the turn of the year, I reported an attempted assassination at the Parliament Police Station under OB number OB21/17/11/2019 at 17:28hrs. I have been living under the weight of intimidation and threats by my political opponents," reads part of the statement.
He added that yesterday's event was a culmination of these threats.
"Yesterday was the culmination of these efforts by my enemies. While enjoying the company of my friends at a popular Nairobi restaurant, I was surrounded by a large group of aggressive individuals. In the melee, there was an exchange of gunfire," adds the statement.
He urged his supporters to remain calm as he had invited relevant authorities to conduct investigations on the incident.
"I invite the relevant authorities to conduct their investigations without fear or favour and I remain confident that the truth will come out. I urge my supporters to remain calm," he added.
Babu Owino was arrested on Friday morning following a late-night shooting at a club in Kilimani, Nairobi that left a man with gunshot wounds.
According to police reports, the bullet got him at the neck and was rushed to the hospital to get medication while in a critical condition.
