The Kenya team arrived back into the country on Monday evening to a heroic welcome after showcasing exemplary performance at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Qatar, Doha.
Hundreds of Kenyans camped at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome the athletes after they landed from Doha.
The friends and relatives of the athletes could not hold back their joy as they sang songs of praise and dance together with the team after the players jetted back.
Led by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, Kenyans heaped praise on the team for standing strong and putting the nation on the world map yet again after bagging a number of medals during the competition. The team arrived home with 11 medals, which comprised of 5 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.
Amina was accompanied by former Vice President Moody Awori and other officials from the government when she welcomed the team back home. Amina said she was proud of the team and asked Kenyans to continue supporting sports in different areas.
“Mine is to congratulate all of you for a job well done in Doha. You kept our flag up and you have kept the promise of athletics in Kenya and we are very proud. I will personally not forget Faith (Kipyegon) who despite having a serious injury fought hard,” said Amina, as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The gold medal winners were Conseslus Kipruto (3,000m steeplechase), Timothy Cheruiyot (1,500m), Hellen Obiri (5,000m), Ruth Chepngetich (marathon), Beatrice Chepkoech (3,000m steeplechase).
