While alluding to opposition to BBI mobilization and the handshake in general by allies of Deputy President William Ruto, Matiang'i on Friday said: "we will not allow them to divide us".

The Interior CS had joined Raila Odinga at Kisii Sports club and Gusii stadium for Building Bridges Initiative report rally.

Matiang'i said Kenyans should not let anyone divert their attention, adding that Uhuru and Raila are firmly in charge.

“Let’s not tolerate those who want to divide us. Let us wait for Uhuru and Raila to tell us where to go. We will not entertain any divisive politics," he said.

"We are brave and let no one divert your attention because our two leaders have told us what to do,” he said in an apparent reference to leaders opposed to the BBI.

Before he rose to speak, a section of Gusii leaders led by Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae insisted that Matiang'i is the de facto leader of Abagusii.

Nominated MP Maina Kamanda lauded Dr Matiang'i, arguing that he's given President Uhuru Kenyatta's government "something to smile about".

"Your son is one of the ministers with true intentions of helping the president and that's why he was elevated. He will be key in the next government," he said.

The meeting brought together over 80 MPs, 14 governors and several national leaders from all corners of Kenya.

While Dr Matiang'i is yet to declare any ambitions, there are reports that he's preparing for a top seat in the country.
