Police in Uasin Gishu county have launched investigations into an incident where one of their colleagues allegedly shot himself dead on Friday morning.
35-year-old Jairus Kiprorich allegedly shot himself in the mouth while on duty in Moiben Sub County.
The incident was confirmed by Moiben Police Commander Jamleck Ngaruiya, who said that fellow officers rushed to the scene after the gunshot. They found him dead.
He said that the officers were preparing to take suspects to court at around 6:30 when the deceased retreated into the office, where he reportedly took his own life.
"Officers were preparing to take suspects to court. Kiprotich left the reports desk and entered the crime office. Immediately, fellow officers heard a gunshot and they found him lying dead,” said the police boss.
He added that investigations have kicked off to establish whether the deceased might have been driven into suicide by depression, considering by hat his wife died recently.
Ngaruiya said that the officer who recently joined the force from the Administration Police had spent several weeks in his Iten home after the death of his wife, only to kill himself.
“I am informed that his wife died recently and we are yet to establish whether he was depressed following the loss, he added.
