Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has gazetted Wednesday as a public holiday to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadhan, reports Capital FM.
The holiday, usually called Idd-ul-fitr, is celebrated world wide among the Muslims. It coincides with official end of Ramadhan.
"Wednesday declared a public holiday as CS Matiangi signs gazette notice for Muslim faithful to mark Idd-ul-Fitr," Capital FM confirmed.
The news were also confirmed by renowned banker Ahmed Mohamed, who also doubles as a cleric in the famous Jamia Mosque in Nairobi.
"Wednesday declared a public holiday as CS Fred Matiangi signs gazette notice for Muslim faithful to mark #Idd-ul-Fitr, marking end of Holy Month of #Ramadhan. Happy #EidAlFitr everyone. Enjoy," he tweeted.
Taking to the Twitter handle, Interior Ministry also confirmed the gazette notice that had been signed by Dr Matiang'i. It said: "CS Dr. @FredMatiangi today, declared Wednesday, 5th June, 2019 as a Public Holiday of General Observation for the occasion of Idd-ul-Fitr."
For a month now, Muslims across the world have been fasting. The holiday is however, not officially recognized by the constitution.
During his Thursday's visit to Jamia Mosque in Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta hinted constitutional changes he said the government will push for Hajji, another holy day in Islamic calendar.
"I have been giving you a holiday (Hajji) for three years now. Remember it's not in the constitution. However, you'll continue going for it. When that time comes, we shall change that book (constitution) and include it," he said.
