People take toilets for granted but little do they know its the root cause of many diseases caused by germs if not well maintained. According to World toilet day, 4.5 Billion people live without safe toilets.

Kepha Nyakundi a community health worker in Kisii county says a safe toilet should be well structured and not a must for it to be made of concrete to be standard.

According to him, a safe toilet should have a vent pipe which takes out the acid. This helps in keeping the toilet fresh to avoid getting out with the stinky smell on your clothes after use.

A good toilet should have a lid. This helps keep away flies which are known to be common contaminators of foods. If one is unable to access water from a piped source to the toilet, Kepha says its recommend to hang a tin outside the toilet filled with water every morning and fit it with a tap.

It's recommended to seek advice from health experts to give you the best location before setting up a pit latrine in your home.

Kepha further says a safe toilet should be built away from water sources such as wells, springs and flowing rivers because they easily contaminate the water.

Since a toilet is a source of germs, Kepha advises people to always wash their hand clean each time after visiting the toilet to keep yourself free from germs.
