During the reign of the past few governments, the fight against corruption and embezzlement of public funds by crooked government officials has been constantly on the top of the list.

Sadly, there is still little to show. The government seems to be lackadaisically fighting the vice and massaging the track record to divert the attention of Kenyans away from how terribly it has failed.

The reason behind the colossal failure is obvious – the perpetrators are within the government, fighting twice as hard against any attempts to seal the loopholes for corruption.

Judging from the jaw-dropping magnitude of the scandals revealed in the past few years involving billions of cash, it is apparent that the country has almost given in to the idea of the proverbial saying "everyone for himself and God for us all."

Most people in the positions of power enrich themselves with public resources in addition to hefty remuneration packages they carry home every month.

Any resource that looks like publicly-owned and can possibly amount to some cash lures them into devising best possible methods to turn it into money.

They selfishly create avenues aimed at benefitting themselves while obfuscating any attempts to track them down.

With the spiralling number of unemployed educated youth, there ought to be a special intervention to avert the obvious foreseeable crisis – the upsurge in blue-collar crime.

This is not in any way aimed at condoning or advocating for crime or any form of delinquency, but unemployed youths replete with skills and knowledge are more than capable of ripping the country apart through all kinds of cunning, crafty and sly schemes that can defraud unsuspecting Kenyans of billions of money.

Recently, seven suspects were arrested in connection with forgery and fraud involving tens of millions of cash through various means including impersonating president Uhuru Kenyatta.

This may be just a tip of the whole iceberg.

Jobless youths are the key masterminds and the brain behind numerous fraudulent swindles that have robbed Kenyans billions of shillings.

Consequently, youth empowerment, the creation of opportunities and a spirited unwavering fight against corruption are fundamental in realigning the youth with the acceptable moral and ethical paths.

The government needs to be on the frontline in curbing the menace and empowering its citizens for nation-building and realization of its development agenda lest they remain only in books.
