Romantic relationship between Migori Governor Okoth Obado and slain student Sharon Otieno was not secret, his lawyer Cliff Ombeta has said.
Mr. Obado was grilled for hours in Kisumu on Tuesday as detectives intensified search for Ms. Otieno's killers.
At KTN on Wednesday, Ombeta insisted that the relationship was in public domain since the two had been pictured before.
"When the photos were circulating in social media long before this, It was not a secret even the people in the county knew about it...there was a relationship," he said.
But according to the criminal lawyer, the public is erroneously crucifying the second term governor on pretext of their relationship.
He insisted that it was impossible for his client to execute someone who had been close to him for years.
"It is a normal thing for people to have a moment of weakness but speaking of murder no," he said.
The presence of politicians in the probe has emerged with Obado's defense team suspecting foul play.
"We mourn and we are sorry that this happened but let us not think with the heart, let's think with the head. Why are politicians commenting...look at Sonko, Kilonzo, Kaluma.. all this are politicians," he said.
Mr. Obado's PA Michael Oyamo was condemned to detention for 14 more days as prosecutors asked for more time to collect evidence.
Sharon's mother, Melida Auma, claimed that the governor had attempted to have her daughter terminate pregnancy in vain thus their differences.
Mr. Oyamo is accused of planning and executing abduction of Sharon along with journalist Barack Oduor who would later survive.
