Reports of Moses Kuria's resignation is one political twist that, just like the handshake, caught people by surprise. Although he would later refute the claims, the political ball had already been set rolling.
The Gatundu South MP on Thursday alleged that his life was in danger adding that he supported the handshake contrary to what many believe. It is no doubt that the handshake now runs the country.
Pundits have argued time and again that Deputy President William Ruto hasn’t warmed up to the idea of the handshake, with its effects getting more real every day. With this, DP Ruto’s ambitions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta get dimmer with each passing day.
Kuria’s resignation would have provided him with a chance to face the President head-on as the de facto opposition leader from Mt Kenya, thereby earning himself a few disgruntled followers.
In the event that Uhuru fails to endorse Ruto in 2022, which is highly likely, the DP would have easily forged a partnership with Kuria, who would have been viewed as the Mt Kenya rebel.
Kuria would have easily been Ruto’s running mate, a move that would have won over some voters from the populous Mt Kenya region.
However, DP Ruto, a relentless schemer who has proclaimed that he will not let anyone stop him from succeeding Uhuru, will be forced to go back to the drawing if Kuria’s rebelliousness was his idea.
We can only wait to see the endless intrigues unfold as 2022 approaches. In the meantime, DP Ruto should rue losing the chance of a lifetime in the form of a failed Moses Kuria resignation attempt.
