Former Kakamega Senator Dr Boni Khalwale has publicly declared that he supports Deputy President Wiliam Ruto's bid to be the country's fifth president.
Speaking at Annex on the outskirts of Eldoret town on Sunday, Khalwale said DP Ruto has what it takes to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta.
He also challenged the Luhya nation to rally behind the DP in the 2022 general elections.
“As Luhyas, we cannot go and work with other tribes who are far away from us yet the Kalenjin community are our neighbours. We want to work with our neighbours first whom we have had heard cordial relationship for a very long time," said Khalwale.
The former Senator further noted that Ruto has higher chances of clinching the top seat compared to any other candidates.
“I support Ruto because he will be an example that also children from poor families can be presidents and not only from the rich families,” he said.
The Ford-Kenya deputy party leader also challenged his party leader Moses Wetangula and the Amani National Congress (ANC) counterpart Musalia Mudavadi to also join DP Ruto's camp if they want to remain relevant in future Kenyan politics.
DP Ruto has been making several trips to the Western region in a bid to build a support base ahead of his 2022 presidential bid and an endorsement from Khalwale, one of the vocal politicians in the region will come as a major boost.
