Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been put on the spot over the poor state of affairs at hospitals in the county.
Despite the health department in Kiambu spending Sh4 billion annually, patients at the Kiambu Level Five Hospital remain dissatisfied with the quality of services they are receiving at the facility.
The hospital is experiencing a shortage of different equipment such as beds, which has made life even harder for patients seeking medical services at the facility.
The facility is grappling with a breakdown of different equipment and congestion, to the extent of two patients being forced to share one bed.
The hospital is also facing an acute shortage of drugs despite the county government purchasing drugs valued at Sh134 million a few months ago.
The shortage of supplies at the facility was confirmed by Nyathuna Ward Representative Edie Kinyanjui, who is also the County Assembly Health Committee chairman.
A spot check done by the Nation revealed that up to three mothers were sharing the same bed at the hospital's maternity wing. The mothers are forced to spend most of their time standing instead of sleeping because of the shortage of beds, to allow each other time to rest.
One of the patients who spoke on condition of anonymity said that life is not easy at the facility. She said that the patients are really suffering since the beds are too small to accommodate more than one patient.
The shortage of drugs and even food is also being experienced at other public hospitals in the county such as Lari Hospital, where patients were on Tuesday last week forced to drink porridge after suppliers went on strike.
