Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado is likely to be among politicians to watch in Nyanza region in the upcoming 2022 general election.
Obado is serving his final term but is yet to hint on his possible successor.
The governor does not enjoy cordial relationship with top leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party and has often complained of being left out in the party's key decisions.
He has often accused the Orange party of engineering some of his troubles.
With the 2022 succession debate taking shape, Obado's next political destination remains unclear. He is, however, likely to play a key role in how Nyanza region will vote in 2022 especially on the presidential poll. With his political experience, Obado could push for a shift on Nyanza region's voting pattern.
There is also speculation that the governor might support Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid. If he opts to support DP Ruto, then it means that he might not exit active politics any time soon.
It could also mean that the embattled governor could find himself in the national government should DP Ruto win the presidential election in 2022 election.
Should Obado team up with DP Ruto in 2022 then politicians in Nyanza should brace for tough times ahead.
The Migori county boss can also opt to retire from active politics after his 10 years service as governor but this is unlikely to happen.
It is a matter of time before we know about Obado’s next political destination after 2022.
