Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti on Thursday ruled out summoning Deputy President William Ruto any time soon over the alleged assassination plot.
Until now, Dr Ruto is yet to make a formal complaint about the claims, making it difficult for detectives to summon four cabinet secretaries from Mt Kenya mentioned in the alleged plot.
In an interview with the Nation, Kinoti insisted that DP Ruto's position in the country requires that before any interrogation, the authenticity of the letter is established.
Until now, the author of the letter purportedly to the president over the assassination plot is yet to be established. It is, however, claimed that a member of the cabinet wrote it.
“If he records a statement before that, well and good,” said Kinoti.
“But the DP is a senior person and cannot be interrogated on the basis of a document whose authenticity has not been verified. What we know at the moment is that the letter was first seen on social media. But we want to determine whether it was sent to the addressee as a hard copy,” said Mr Kinoti.
Mr Kinoti said that once they have a suspect, they will then invite the CSs named in the letter to record statements.
“We have told them that we shall call them back here to record statements once we determine the authenticity of the letter,” said the DCI.
On Monday, reports indicated that DP William Ruto was not ready to be grilled by one Michael Sang, who had been assigned by Kinoti to follow the matter.
“(Sang) was kept waiting for the better part of Monday afternoon in vain. We are still waiting for the way forward,” said an informed officer who asked not to be named.
