The Directorate Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday confiscated tones of ethanol which was being shipped to Kampala, Uganda via Kenya illegally. Uganda is a landlocked country hence it ships its products through Kenya.
According to the DCI, the illegal products had been disguised o be a shipment of Spaghetti.
“Over 28 Tonnes of suspected #Ethanol were today confiscated at Mombasa Port by a Multi-agency Team following verification of Two Kampala-bound Containers. The product was contained in Two 40ft containers imported by Oceans Int'l (U) LTD, declared to be ferrying boxes of Spaghetti,” wrote DCI.
“Upon verification, 72 drums each weighing 200kg were found in each container, with a few boxes of Spaghetti being placed at the entrance for guise. The cargo has been secured at customs warehouse with samples being taken to Govt Chemist for further analysis,” DCI stated in a separate tweet.
The confiscated products have been secured as investigations into the case continue. It still remains unknown who the shipment belonged.
This is not the first time ethanol has been confiscated at the port.
