Just a few days after students at the University of Eldoret (UoE) resumed their session, those residing in the university hostels are vacating at an alarming rate.
With every student having his/her own reasons to vacate, the university premises are almost empty.
However, leaving the hostels have left a lot of disturbing worries on the survival of the students outside the school compound and the fate of the businesses inside the institution.
Here are some of the obtrusive issues that arise as the students move out;
Firstly, the students are leaving the more secure hostels to reside in some of the rental houses with inadequate security. Since the university security cannot adequately protect the students from vices such as theft and abuse, it raises worries on the rise of the vices once the students are out of the school premises.
Another vexing issue as the students leave the hostels is the fate of the businesses in the university. The fate of the businesses in the students' centre is dangling at their graves. There will be no enough customers as the students vacate the hostels. The owners of the business will make fewer profits and more losses that might lead to their closure.
Some of the hostel janitors also risk losing their jobs since there will be few or no students left in the hostels. Even the students who are willing to remain in the hostels might suffer peer influence and pressure to vacate the hostels.
Therefore, this is a call for the Chepkoilel-based university administration and the Students’ Council to intervene in how to make the hostels a better place to live in.
