Deputy President William Ruto has appealed to students to stop destroying school infrastructure and undermining the education system amid increased arson in public schools.
Ruto said the Government and parents spend a lot of money building schools so that students can have access to quality education.
Ruto said: "I ask students not to engage in acts that undermine education by destroying infrastructure and making it impossible for us to empower them."
Ruto spoke during the opening of Zawadi Mixed Secondary School in Kamukunji, Nairobi County.
He was accompanied by MPs Aden Duale (Garissa Township) Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Yusuf Hassan (Kamukunji), Yusuf Haji (Garissa), Abdullai Ali (Wajir), Esther Pasaris (Nairobi), James Gakuya (Embakasi North) and Charles Kanyi (Starehe).Others were Jude Njomo (Kiambu), Beatrice Nkatha (Tharaka Nithi), Ernest Kivai (Vihiga), Abdi Omar (Mbalambala), Mohammed Dahiye (Dadaab), Millicent Omanga (nominate) and Mpuri Aburi (EALA).
Duale said the emerging trend of students destroying school property showed lack of discipline among students.He called on teachers, parents and religious leaders to work together and ensure students observe discipline.
Duale said: "This trend shows we do not discipline our children as teachers, parents and religious leaders."
Haji told students to be mindful of others who wish to use the school facilities they are destroying.
