The elders said the community will vote for the presidential candidate who will be endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta to succeed him.

Council's spokesperson Patrick Muiru said Uhuru is the supremo leader of the Agikuyu and therefore they will vote according to his guidance.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta is the sole spokesperson of the community and we shall only support the candidate he will support," Muiru said when the elders met in a Nakuru hotel on Saturday.

Uhuru has kept mum over 2022 polls leaving Kenyans guessing on who is his favourite candidate.

The Jubilee Party leader has a 2013 pre-election deal with Deputy President William Ruto to back his candidature in the next election but lately the President has been close to opposition leader Raila Odinga, a relationship some analysts speculate is a sign he might endorse Raila for the top seat.

The elders welcomed the March 9 handshake between Uhuru and Raila saying it had brought calmness and unity and further warned the politicians who have embarked on 'early' campaigns which are polarising the nation.

"It is wrong for politicians to crisis-cross the country into a campaign mood yet we have just come out of a long electioneering period that affected the economy," Muiru said in a statement.
