Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the Sh400 million fake gold scandal.
Speaking on Monday morning on Citizen TV's Daybreak show, the legislator noted that the matter turned political after President Uhuru Kenyatta's name was dragged into the scam.
"The reason as to why this issue has become political is because the president’s name has been dragged into this from the recording that has been circulating. One can clearly hear who is talking in that recording," he said.
He further slammed the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) under the leadership of Raila Odinga over claims of using the handshake to mince money using the president's name.
"Those people who came to shake hands with us did well but we are quite uncomfortable if this is what they are bringing to us. We are having a situation where people who have come to be associated with the president are now using that association to make money," he added.
The legislator noted that the fake gold scandal is a very serious issue, and urged Members of Parliament to delve into the matter before it plunges the country into international disrepute.
This comes following a leaked phone conversation between a man believed to be a local senior politician and a Dubai-based gold dealer.
In the audio, President Uhuru Kenyatta is alleged to have instructed one of his cabinet secretaries to order the release of a gold consignment purportedly confiscated at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
