Raila had in 2016 promised to secure the release of his one-time flamboyant political ally Don Bosco Gichana who has been languishing in a Tanzanian prison for the last 7 years.

Gichana shot to the limelight in the run-up to 2007 general elections after gifting Raila the coveted red Hummer. He later ran for the Kitutu Chache South Parliamentary seat in 2013 but lost to Richard Onyonka.

Gichana, 40, has been behind bars in Tanzania where he is facing money laundering charges. He was accused alongside prominent Arusha-based lawyer Median Mwale, Boniface Mwimbwa, and Elias Ndejembi.

He was arrested on March 29, 2013, and has been in Tanzanian detention facilities since then.

The renewed push for his release was sparked by fiery lawyer Miguna Miguna who on Monday said that despite Gichana being loyal to Raila, he has done nothing to secure his release.

“Mr. Don Bosco Gichana was @RailaOdinga's blossom friend leading up to the 2007 election. It was Don Bosco Gichana who bought @RailaOdinga the (in)famous Hammer. Yet @RailaOdinga has never publicly asked @MagufuliJP his "friend" to release Don Bosco Gichana. #FreeDonBoscoGichana,” said Miguna in a tweet.

Miguna, who was first deported to Canada in February this year by Kenyan authorities further said that Gichana has been held without any hearing for all these years.

Leaders from Gusii community have in the past threatened to march to Tanzania to push for his release. This has, however, not happened.
