Witnesses said the trouble started when the taxi driver Clinton Aming'a spotted the rider Philip Ombati hugging the sex worker only identified as Diana.

"Diana came to buy tomatoes accompanied by Ombati when Aming'a spotted them. Aming'a confronted the two as they were hugging each other and attacked the rider accusing him of snatching his woman," Jeriah Moraa, a trader narrated.

Ms. Moraa said Aming'a abandoned the woman and fought back in self-defense.

A Kisii county reinforcement officer who identified himself as Osoro said he was controlling the flow of the matatus along the busy Kisii-Migori road when he was called to intervene.

"I rushed to the scene and found the two on the ground wrestling. I roughed them up and frog-marched them," he said.

Mr. Osoro said it was shameful for the two men to fight over a sex worker.

"Sex workers are not any man's wife. Men should stop bringing shame in society," he added.
