When President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Kisumu last year in December, he promised to revamp the economy of the lakeside city of Kisumu, lining up the Special Economic Zone as part of his infrastructural agenda in the region.

Trade and Industrialization boss Peter Munya, Road and Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia alongside Petroleum boss John Munyes held a closed-door meeting with Raila before touring the site.

"In a briefing meeting with Hon. Raila Odinga as we embark on the familiarisation tour of the proposed site for the Special Economic Zone at Ombeyi, Kisumu county this morning," said Munya.

A statement from Raila's aide indicated that the four would visit a site in Muhoroni before inspecting Kibos dry port in Kisumu.

Nyanza has witnessed remarkable development since the handshake between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga

"H.E Raila Odinga in the company of Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya, Eng. James Macharia and John Munyes are on a working tour in Kisumu that is aimed at revamping Kisumu's economic base. They are set to tour the proposed SEZ land in Ombeyi, Muhoroni before inspecting the Kibos ICD, KPA oil jetty, old airport, dry port and the shipbuilding yard within Kisumu," he wrote on Facebook.

Early this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta also held a closed-door meeting with Raila Odinga in Kisumu hours after the burial of former Youth Fund boss Bruce Odhiambo.

They are reported to have discussed several ways of putting the economy of Nyanza back on track.
