In what could be a brewing battle against West Pokot Governor John Longanyapuo over his dalliance with DP William Ruto, KANU team on Saturday pulled the first warning albeit indirectly.
Tiaty MP William Kamket, a close ally of KANU leader Gideon Moi, was installed as Pokot community spokesman, a post that has been held by Longanyapuo since 2017.
Prof Longanyapuo has been projecting himself as de facto spokesman of the community, a move that could put him at loggerheads with Moi now.
Over 500 elders from Pokot community installed Kamket, a fierce critic of DP William Ruto on Saturday. The post remained vacant for 16 since the death of Francis Lotodo, before Longanyapuo took over.
Baringo County Assembly Deputy Speaker Makale Selemoi said the ceremony marked the beginning of a new leadership.
He called on Kamket to take up the leadership role and lead the community as expected.
“Pick up the mantle and lead us well. We want a leadership that will drive us to the future,” Selemoi said.
While addressing the gathering, Kamket promised to lead the community well. He said that the community will support BBI initiative.
In the past, Kamket, a close ally of Moi, had insisted that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga will determine who becomes president in 2022.
"Fellow Kenyans... the next President of the Republic Kenya will be decided by H.E Uhuru M. Kenyatta and H.E. Raila A. Odinga. Those of the contrary opinion are invited to take their rightful place in the Opposition. KAMKET," he wrote.
