The yet to be launched Kenyatta University Hospital (KUH) has been on the limelight in the past few days especially after the former Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda was appointed to chair the hospital's board of directors.
Former Thika Level Five Hospital boss Dr Andrew Toro has also been appointed to be the hospital's acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
But which is this hospital that many know little about to an extent that some are even confusing it for Kenyatta National Hospital?
Here are quick facts about the new health facility based within KU main campus as documented by Wikipedia;
1. The hospital whose complete name is Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, was conceived by Prof Mugenda eight years ago during her tenure (2006-2016) as VC of Kenyatta University to serve as the teaching hospital of the Kenyatta University Medical School.
2. KUH is a modern state-of-art 600-bed facility with special medical amenities, including a 21-bed Intensive Care Unit, eight operating rooms (theatres), an emergency room, dialysis unit and the latest in imaging equipment.
3. In April 2019, after two years of lying idle due to ownership disagreements between the university and the Ministry of Health, it was decided to make it a state-owned corporation, operated by a board of directors answerable to the Health CS. However, the hospital remains the teaching hospital of Kenyatta University.
4. The hospital that is yet to open its doors to the public, has been constructed by a Chinese company at a cost of Sh9.85 billion.
5. The hospital will be managed by a board of directors whose chair is Prof Mugenda. However, the day-to-day operations of the hospital will be handled by a CEO appointed by Health CS.
