Emerging details indicate that opposition leader Raila Odinga’s younger sister Ruth Odinga was similarly a controversial figure back in the day, just as her brother is currently deemed.

Raila is considered one of the most controversial politicians in the nation, with the controversies rooted in his alleged involvement in the 1982 failed coup against retired President Daniel Moi’s government, many violent demonstrations and a series of political betrayals.

Similarly, Ruth was at some point in the middle of such when she was accused of leading a strike during her schooling days at the Asumbi Girls High School in Homa Bay County.

She would later join Kenya High School after the incident where she would again meet President Uhuru Kenyatta who studied at the nearby St Mary’s School after a long disconnection, she told the Standard in an interview conducted back in 2017.

“Our paths crossed again after I left Asumbi girls for Kenya High when I was accused of leading a strike. I was in Kenya High while the President was at St Mary’s. We were friends, I even know his college sweethearts,” she is quoted.

The two were separated after the 1966 fall-out between their fathers Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and founding father and first President Jomo Kenyatta, after which their families became distant, losing the initial close contact.

Ruth would later rise to the post of Kisumu Deputy Governor, a slot she occupied from 2013-2017.
