A family in Naivasha woke up to a sad Sunday after reports emerged that their relative had killed herself inside a police cell.
The incident took place at Mai Mahiu police station in Naivasha.
According to sources, a mother of two who had been arrested over chang’aa peddling hanged herself in a women’s cell where she was being held alone. The body of the woman found dangling from a grill in the cell.
“She hanged herself with a headscarf which she tied to a grill in the cell where she was alone,” a source at the station said.
A relative who spoke to the Standard said they visited the cell where they found the woman hanging in the cell.
“The mother of two was arrested for selling chang’aa and we expected her to be arraigned in court on Monday only to receive a call that she had committed suicide,” he said.
Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident.
“In the suicide case we have opened an inquest file though initial investigations indicate that the woman committed suicide using her scarf,” Waweru said.
