National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has declared his stand on the proposal to protect sitting governors from prosecution.
Duale, also Garissa MP said that the proposal is not only biased but a waste of time. He said that the house will shoot the bill down as soon as it arrives.
“Senator Cherargei is abusing his office as the chairman of the Senate’s Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee. His proposal will only perpetuate impunity and corruption, which is against the president and Jubilee Party’s resolve to fight the vice,” said Duale on Wednesday.
According to the senator, prosecuting governors while they are still in office amounts to killing devolution. He wants the county bosses to be given the freedom to deliver their duties without fear of being arrested.
He argues that it is unfair to arrest county boss yet they have been tasked with duties to perform at different dockets.
The Nandi Senator wants governors to be prosecuted after they leave their respective offices to ensure that their administrations run smoothly.
This is after the court barred Governors Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Moses Kassaine Lenolkalul (Samburu) and Ferdinard Waititu (Kiambu) from accessing their offices over corruption claims. The decision of the court has affected the operations of these county governments.
