Muthama said he will only back the referendum if it proposes ways of cleaning the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and compensating victims and families of post-poll violence.

The former Senator also said that he will support the referendum if it proposes ways of curbing wastage in government and stamping out massive graft.

He also noted that he will back the constitutional changes if they will propose more allocation for counties.

According to Muthama, electoral reforms, fight against corruption, reducing the high wage bill and more allocation to counties is what matters to Kenyans now.

Muthama said the country needs urgent electoral reforms for future general elections to be credible.

He stated that electoral fraud and injustices are what is ailing the country.

“Our problems including corruption are as a result of electoral theft and injustices which must be addressed,” he said in an interview with a local radio station on Friday.

Muthama at the same time hit out at politicians pushing for a referendum to create more political positions.

“We don’t need more seats because Kenyans are well represented, what we need is fair play in election matters,” he added.

He said Kenyans want more money allocated to counties, noting that the 15 per cent allocation to counties is not enough and has seen Kenyans denied crucial services.

The former senator is proposing for 45 per cent of Kenya's budget to go to county governments.

Muthama said he will campaign against the referendum if it is aimed at pushing for the interests of politicians seeking power in 2022.
