A premium shuttle driver plying Kisii-Nairobi route is currently nursing serious injuries after angry passengers descended on him with kicks and blows for allegedly delaying departure.
The angry passengers accused the driver Erick Monari for taking long to depart from Kisii town on Tuesday evening even after the matatu was full of passengers.
“We could not sit and wait for the driver to come yet we had been booked at 5 pm. We waited for over 4 hours for him to arrive before we could leave. Every passenger got angry and we launched a search for the driver who we found consuming beer at a pub,” said Jephas Ondigo, one of the passengers.
Amos Kerenge, another passenger said the driver was unable to explain why he had to go into hiding yet he knew he had passengers to take to Nairobi.
“He gave us a fake excuse that we were to depart at 9 pm but in the receipt, the departure time was 5 pm. We roughed him up so that next time he will not repeat the same,” he noted.
Kisii Central OCPD Francis Nguli said the driver could not proceed with the journey following the injuries he sustained during the attack.
“The driver ran for safety at Kisii Central police station and a different driver was hired to take the passengers to Nairobi since the attacked one is receiving treatment at Hema hospital,” he said.
