Emerging details indicate that the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli is quite serious about his push to have the next President of Kenya come from the Western Kenya region.
The vocal trade unionist has been pushing for Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi's presidency after the next general elections.
Speaking during a funeral service in Lugari in Saturday, the self-proclaimed Luhya nation elder said that he is in talks with some of the nation's biggest political names to back the former Deputy Prime Minister's 2022 ambitions.
He claimed that he has since discussed the issue with among others, President Uhuru Kenyatta who represents the Central region, Opposition leader Raila Odinga (Nyanza) and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho (Coast).
"I have reached out to President Uhuru Kenyatta, who commands Central region, Mr Hassan Joho who has taken charge of Coast region and Mr. Raila Odinga who commands Nyanza, among other senior politicians to support Mr Mudavadi in 2022," he was quoted by the Nation.
He was speaking during the burial of area lawmaker Ayub Savula's daughter who died on Wednesday, December 26.
The function was also attended by other regional leaders, among them Mudavadi.
Mudavadi has been meeting leaders from different regions of the nation, mostly Central Kenya, in what seems like finally being serious about his bid.
He is likely to battle it out with among others, Deputy President William Ruto whose candidature is also in the public domain.
