Requiem masses are known to be held before the deceased is laid to rest, but that was not the case regarding Murungi, the founder of Mastermind Tobacco popular for its Super Match cigarette brand.

The function was held at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, where just as was the case during the burial, only a few people attended and spoke at the event. There were no printed eulogies or large crowds of people who knew him.

Murungi who founded the company in the 80s was buried at his palatial home in Tharaka Nithi County, in a function that saw police officers deployed to keep locals and a section of family members out.

The Thursday sermon was given by Pastor Luke Jaoko from Nairobi Chapel and attended by among others, MPs Kareke Mbiuki and Moses Kuria. Others present were former National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Michael Gichangi.

Others were Busia Senator Amos Wako, former Agriculture Principal Secretary Romano Kiome and Muhoho Kenyatta.

Those present hailed him as a giver and a quiet man. His old friend Gitahi Kahuro confirmed that he was indeed a man who was not friendly to strangers.

"The way I knew him, he was not friendly with people he did not know,” said Kahuro as quoted by the Standard.
